‘Insane’ amount woman spends on a single strawberry

A Los Angeles foodie paid an eye-watering amount for a luxurious strawberry from a fancy grocer and shared her honest verdict.

A Los Angeles woman has sparked a frenzy online after splurging on a single strawberry at the high-end grocery store Erewhon, known for its outrageous prices.

The California hotspot, frequented by celebrities like the Kardashians, Justin Bieber, and Brooklyn Beckham, sells a range of everyday staples that come with a hefty price tag.

Internet personality Alyssa Antoci, who also does social media for the supermarket, took to TikTok over the weekend to share a taste test of her jaw-dropping purchase.

The ‘organic single berry’, sold by the Japanese brand Elly Amai, set her back a staggering $19 USD, or around $30 AUD, and was imported all the way from Kyoto.

According to the company’s website, they pride themselves on offering only the “highest-quality fruits from Japan’s most celebrated farms”.

The brand also sells a pack of 15 strawberries for $90 and a rockmelon for $95, which apparently make a great gift or special treat, according to the product descriptions.

In a video that now has six million views, the 21-year-old sat outside an Erewhon store, ready to taste the berry that apparently claims the title of the “best-tasting strawberry in the entire world”.

As she opened the plastic container to reveal the berry resting on a small tray, she took a bite and said, “Wow. That’s the best strawberry I’ve had in my life. That’s crazy,” before spreading the word to those around her.

“I need to eat every last bit of it,” she said as she finished off the strawberry.

Commenters were naturally shocked at the price tag, with one saying, “That’s a $1.99 strawberry from the farmer’s market, wrapped in Lunchable packing”.

“This is so ridiculous,” wrote another, as someone else said that it was a scam and that no berry is worth that amount.

“This p**ssed me off so bad,” a different user replied. “This is embarrassing,” said another.

“Who else thinks Erewhon is a social experiment to see what some people will spend on?” read one comment with 360k likes.

However, others were on board with the buy, saying it “looks so good”.

“That strawberry is the ‘it girl’ of strawberries,” quipped another.

It’s not the first time the price tag of Erewhon goods has raised eyebrows, and it certainly won’t be the last.

In January, an Aussie tourist in LA shared the shocking bill after ordering lunch at the popular organic grocery store.

Emma Gillman spent $77 AUD on what she describes as a “snack plate” and an iced coffee.

She ordered the organic rotisserie chicken combo plate with broccolini and buffalo cauliflower, and was surprised to find the meal cost $29.50 USD ($47.60 AUD).

To make matters worse, her large iced latte with organic milk cost $16 USD ($25.80 AUD), and adding coconut cream on top was another $7 USD ($11.30).
