Aussie coffee beans with more than 200 five-star rating

A budget supermarket drink that has hundreds of five-star reviews online has been praised for tasting just as good as a barista cuppa.

A history of coffee in Melbourne

It’s a known fact that Aussies love their coffee — but they seem to have developed a real love for this Melbourne-based brand’s bag of roasted coffee beans.

The $20 bag of Grinders Coffee, also available at Coles and Woolies, has become such a hit it’s received more than 300 positive reviews on Amazon.

Even an “experienced coffee barista” said it’s a great alternative “if you just want a decent cheap cup of coffee”.

“These are a good choice for the cost as an alternative to bespoke local coffee beans that are freshly roasted but a great deal more expensive,” he added.

Coffee enthusiasts have described it as “the best tasting coffee beans”.

“My goodness this ‘Smooth & Creamy’ medium roasted coffee from Grinders is the bee’s knees for my Sunbeam espresso coffee machine,” one woman wrote on Amazon.

“I quite enjoy this coffee, made in a little home grade Gaggia espresso machine. I’m on my third bag now. It’s smooth and rich, and saving me quite a few dollars in coffee out,” another fan wrote.

Based on the 342 ratings, it was given 4.6 on ‘value for money’ and 4.4 on ‘flavour’.

One woman said she loves it so much she has it on subscription “so I never run out”, while another added: “This coffee has met all my requirements for a good cup of coffee”

One coffee lover explained based on the price, taste and quality “this exceeded my expectations”.

“You can definitely taste the hints of malt, honey and cocoa which works incredibly well with cappuccinos and lattes.”

It’s no surprise the coffee has been a big hit. In May this year, the company managed to nab third place in Canstar Blue’s ‘best coffee’ award.

Aldi’s Lazzio coffee took out the top spot, followed by Harris in second place.

Canstar Blue surveyed more than 940 Aussie consumers for their feedback and rated more than 10 of the most popular brands in Australia on taste, aroma, texture, packaging, variety, value for money and overall satisfaction.

Grinders, who recently introduced the first compostable coffee capsules, had a consistent four-star rating in all seven categories, except ‘variety’.

“We are absolutely thrilled that our in-home Grinders coffee beans are in the top three,” Sally Byrne, Grinders Coffee general manager told news.com.au at the time.

“We strive towards creating a consistent and memorable coffee experience for all our customers. Our home is Australia. We care about Australians and their coffee tastes, from the moment we opened on Lygon Street in 1962 to now all over the country.”

The coffee, which is made using 100 per cent Arabica beans, is manufactured in Melbourne, where the beans have been individually roasted to extract the “best flavour and aroma possible”.

According to the analysis of Mordor Intelligence, the growth rate of at-home coffee increased to 37 per cent in March 2020 in Australia, around the same time the coronavirus pandemic hit the country.

And with the majority of Aussies consumers ordering different types of coffees online, the increase of at-home consumption has come at no surprise.

In fact, cafe lovers have also found solace in none other than instant coffee with Vittoria Coffee sales seeing a big spike with sales “through the roof”.

“With customers increasingly spending more time at home, particularly those in lockdown, we’ve seen a greater demand for a cafe experience at home,” a Woolworths spokesman told news.com.au

Vittoria, another family-owned business based in Australia, experienced a big increase in sales with its $10 Freeze Dried Instant Coffee and Coffee Bags which launched in June.

According to Canstar Blue’s 2021 review, almost one-in-three (29 per cent) of respondents prefer to make their cuppa at home rather than buying a coffee outside.
