A proposal for a floating pontoon set to serve up beverages of choice to fishos wetting a line at Corroboree Billabong, has been lodged with the NT Liquor Commission.

If approved, the application from Top End Houseboats would provide food and beverages and a place for fishos and tourists to enjoy Corroboree Billabong in a unique way.

“Top End Houseboats Pty Ltd currently offer the hiring of houseboats and fishing boats at Corroboree Billabong approximately 115kms from Darwin NT,” the application said.

“A new pontoon and a floating reception and cafe area with a public viewing platform has been built along with continued improvement to the jetty and new fishing boats.

“This will offer visitors and tourists an area to enjoy the views of the Corroboree Billabong and Mary River System.”

The liquor licence will see the provision of a small range of liquor available for sale, including beer, pre mixed drinks, white and red wine, tea and coffee and non-alcoholic drinks as well as pre-packaged snack food.

The application would see the pontoon bar open from 10am to 6.30pm daily, from April 1 to November 30 during the dry season and popular fishing season.

Amateur Fishermen’s Association of the NT David Ciaravolo said provided it was installed properly it would be a great addition to the area.

“Corroboree is a beautiful place for people to visit and it would be certainly an amenity that would be quite unique on the water, that is able to serve refreshments,” he said.

“(But) we need to make sure any developments are in step with natural and cultural values.”

The objection period to the application runs from September 7 to October 7, with objections to be made on the basis it may adversely affect the amenity of the surrounding area or may pose a risk to the surrounding community.

Soon it will be fishos and tourists, rather than the wildlife, with the best seat in the house at Corroboree Billabong if an application for a pontoon-pub is approved.
