Darwin’s high tide has claimed its latest vehicular victims with two cars and a truck totally submerged at Nightcliff Jetty.
Territorians enjoying their public holiday were startled by the sight of a 4WD, a ute and a truck completely covered by the tides on Monday.
The vehicles were completely waterlogged by the morning’s 7m high tides, with some witnesses noticing that a window had been left open on the 4WD.
A small crowd watched on as all three vehicles were winched out of the water on Monday afternoon, ahead of the anticipated 6.2m peak at 6.40pm.
One resident took to Facebook to say they understood the vehicles drove to the popular fishing launching site at 3am.
The drama began at about 1am when the vehicle owner parked his Nissan at the beach during low-tide and became bogged.
The other Nissan and the lorry were rescue vehicles driven by his friends which were in turn submerged by the incoming tide.
“I just got stuck over the side and there was no water at that time and suddenly the water started coming in. The truck and the car tried to come in and they got stuck.” he said, sharing it was his first time bogged.
Tow truck operator Erick Fernandez said stampings are a regular occurrence.
“Once a week at least,” he said.
While the total bill isn’t yet known, each vehicle could be up to $2000 to remove from the sand, not to mention the cost of repairs.
NT Police have been contacted for comment.
