Season 10 of the Million Dollar Fish competition will give fishos a whopping 10 chances to reel in a life-changing million-dollar barramundi catch.

The 10th season of Australia’s richest fishing competition opens on Tuesday, October 1, and is set to be another massive event with 10 fish sporting million-dollar tags.

This includes one newly tagged fish for Season 10, and nine fish from Season 9 with reactivated $1m tags.

The million-dollar tagged barramundi will also remain active in the off season, allowing fishos to try for the prize all year round.

Speaking from Dinah Beach Boat Ramp, where three $10,000 tagged barras were released on Monday, Sportsbet’s Thijs Bors said this year was going to be “absolutely massive”.

“This year if you see one of the red tags, you’ve got a one in 10 chance it’s going to be a million dollar fish – it’s huge,” he said.

“There will be competitions this year – there will be March Madness, there will be Fishmas and Double the Dough weekends, so keep your eye on the socials.”

If a million dollar fish is caught the others will revert back to $10,000 barras.

While the million dollar tags will remain active all year, the $10,000 tags will run from October 1 to March 31, expiring in April next year.

Major Events Minister Marie-Clare Boothby said the competition would boost the Top End’s economy and lifestyle.

“The Top End is the only place in the country where you can go fishing and stand a chance to catch a million-dollar fish or one of the 99 $10,000 red-tagged barra released across the five main fishing regions – Tiwi Islands, Darwin, Katherine, Kakadu, and Arnhem Land,” she said.

“This is a competition anyone aged 18 and over can be a part of, all you have to do is register and wet a line, hit the water across the Top End and enjoy unparalleled fishing with the chance to reel in cash.”

The competition returns after a history-making Season 9, where 19-year-old Keegan Payne from Katherine caught the 67cm million-dollar barramundi in the Katherine River.

Keegan was the first person since the competition began to reel in a million-dollar fish.

Last year recorded the highest number of registrations ever, 9602 of the 61,601 entrants from interstate or overseas.

Season 9 injected an estimated $91.8m into the NT economy, of which $49.6 million was new money to the Territory.

Cancer Council NT has been named the Million Dollar Fish charity for Season 10.

“Good luck to you all and remember Territory anglers to slip, slop and slap before you go in the sun,” chief executive Tanya Izod said.

Registrations opened at the start of the month, and 11,231 people have already signed up.

Registering also puts you in the draw to win monthly giveaways, with almost $80,000 in prizes to be won, including a boat, fishing packs and flight vouchers.
