THE crew from the Sea Jay factory in Bundaberg have just released their latest model, the 5.50 Velocity Sports side Console. And, yes, they really have done their homework.

Measuring at 5.50m with a 2.45 beam, there’s plenty of room in this great fishing boat for the family or for the serious fisherman and a few mates.

And with the amount of interior room there is definitely room for the overnight trip to that special place.

Entry to the boat is via a large stepped boarding ladder then through the transom door into a large lower deck.

To the right is a large side console that has more than enough room to mount all the new electronics as well as two way radios and MP3s.

Mounted on the front of the console is a vertical rod holder capable of holding six rods. As you come through the transom door a large in-built plumbed live bait tank sits the starboard side of the transom deck.

Moving on to the raised cast deck (which is big enough to put down a swag) there’s so much storage that there’s no excuse to have gear lying on the floor.

The main compartment is 1300mm long x 550mm wide and 500mm deep, big enough for that large Esky or put in a 800mm wide fish Esky and still have room for the drinks/food Esky. In front of this is a large storage area and to the right is a smaller locker that can fit six tackle box trays.

The forward storage area has enough room to house the batteries for the Min Kota should it be required. There is an electric motor plate welded into the deck as standard.

Along with the standard features such as navigation lights, bilge pump, hand rails, hydraulic steering, two pedestal seats with five seat sockets, there is a 175 litre underfloor fuel tank and with the great fuel economy of the Honda 135, those long trips are easier without the worry of carrying extra fuel.

Sitting on a new Oceanic tandem trailer completes this new exciting boating package.

On the water, the Sea Jay Honda powered 5.50 Velocity jumped on to the plane with ease and before long we were cruising at 60km/h and at wide open throttle we were able to reach 74km/h.

The boat sat flat and stable and even when put into had hard turn, there was no sign of cavitation. Finding a large wash from a work boat we were to run the boat along the wash, across the wash and in any direction this boat showed no bad manners at all.

In summary, this is a great all rounder when either chasing big mack’s out wide or running up the rivers chasing barra, this boat will do it all.

With the wide beam, the under floor storage fishing four people would not cause any discomfort and would prove to be a good rig for all keen fishos and their families.
