WHEN three Territory anglers set off from Dundee Beach for some bluewater action they didn’t expect to encounter an incredible fish feeding frenzy like this.

Chris “Ruti” Rutishauser (aka Bananaman), Michael Rutishauser and Daniel Hutchings were amazed by the enormous numbers and ferocity of the mega-school of feeding trevally.

The fish were so easy to catch the lads were instead competing to see if they could avoid catching a fish.

“The challenge was to see if you could run your rod tip through the water without hooking a fish,” Ruti said.

On the first day of fishing the enormous school was circling their boat and the boat of another angler, known only as “Duffman”.

But the action really heated up on the second day out, when the school - estimated to number in the thousands - cornered some terrified baitfish directly under the boat.

The baitfish were even jumping into the boat in an effort to escape the rapacious predators.

The water was so thick with fish the fishos could have almost walked on water.

The trevally-nado appears to be made up of mainly brassy trevally, with some golden trevally and bludger trevally making up the numbers.

ABC Tales From The Tinny producer Mario “Fadge” Faggion posted the video to the popular Darwin fishing show’s Facebook page.

“I’ve seen some big schools of fish up here, but I’ve never seen a school of trevally that numerous before, and staying so close to a boat,” Mr Faggion said.

Local angler Glenn “Harbourmaster” Hubble was similarly impressed when shown the video.

“Great footage,” Mr Hubble said.

“Although I am a bit disappointed the boys did not dive in and try to catch one with their teeth.”
