IT was once a British breakfast favourite.

Now half of us do not know what a kipper is.

A survey discovered that 54 per cent were unaware it is a smoked herring.

More than a quarter said it was smoked mackerel and one in 10 believed it was its own species.

Other once-popular fish that caused confusion included rock salmon, the Marine Stewardship Council study found.

Four in 10 believed it was a species of salmon when it is from a small shark and is also known as huss or dogfish.
