Organisers of the Million Dollar Fish Season 9 have revealed the biggest hint to date on where to catch the ultimate prize.
There are now 42 barramundi in Northern Territory waters tagged to win $1 million for one lucky fisho.
Since the competition began in 2015, no one has ever reeled in the elusive top prize – but this year Major Events and Sportsbet “guaranteed” a winner.
This week a heat map was released showing the areas most likely to host a million dollar fish, with darker spots indicating more fish.
Sportsbet’s Thijs Bors also revealed three exact locations where fish had been released.
“I’ve got three rivers and they’re three of my favourites,” he told ABC Radio Darwin.
The first was East Alligator River, running along the border of Arnhem Land.
“Go to the boat ramp, turn towards the right, go upstream, when you see the rock faces, have a crack there,” he said.
Second was Corroboree Billabong, for which the access road is currently closed due to flooding.
“When the road opens, you’ve got the T-intersection, so you launch at the boat ramp, go right, away from the boat houses, you’ve got the T-intersection, that’s where we released a fish,” Mr Bors said.
“Go through to the bottom of the rock hole, that’s another popular spot for fish.”
His last tip was for the Adelaide River.
“If you go past Goat Island, go towards Acacia Creek, there’s a couple of creeks that flow in there but you’ll see the colour change from clear blue freshwater coming into the nice brown Adelaide River – give that a crack.”
Mr Bors reminded punters that “those fish swim around”, and said the winner would be the first person to phone in and get verified, any time of the day or night.
The number one tip was to do the admin before wetting a line: “make sure you’re registered”.
So far this season eight fish have been caught and $90,000 claimed.
In total there are 61 barra swimming Territory waters worth $10,000 each.
The competition closes at the end of the month, and if the million dollar barra is caught before then the others will revert to $10,000 fish.
