AT this time of the year king threadfin salmon can be caught in large numbers, particularly in coastal run-offs when targeting barramundi.

The problem with catching large numbers of king threadfin is they are quite sensitive to handling, especially when they are caught in areas of high water temperature and low salinity.

Additionally, anglers should understand that king threadfin have a similar life cycle to barramundi, with all the large fish being the important female breeders.

While people may choose to retain some of the salmon they catch for a feed, any additional fish should be released wherever possible.

If you do intend to release these fish:

Minimise the handling time and exposure to air. All the added stress of removing them from the water could literally be the difference between life and death.

If practical and safe, remove the hooks while the fish is still in the water. If it is safe to do so, revive a tired fish by holding it gently in the water with its head facing into any current to allow water to pass over its gills.

If anglers can adopt the same sort of stewardship that they have shown towards barra they will be helping to keep the stocks in great condition for all to enjoy.
