Going remote is no longer a guarantee for fish

As much as I love fishing in the Territory, it’s getting harder to find unfished water.

As much as I love fishing in the Territory, it’s getting harder to find unfished water.

“Do the miles to get the smiles” is an adage that, unfortunately, doesn’t always ring true. I recently ventured to the remote Minimini system, launching at the south, travelling to the mouth and then through the gulf.

It’s a big day of travel, and the preparation for these trips is massive. Two boats fished hard for three days for a total of around 20 barra, and what was noticeable was the lack of bycatch such as blue salmon, queenies, goldies and jew.

The highlight of the trip was a brief session on a small snag pile where we got several solid goldies, then I dropped an 85cm-plus barra before a cast later connected to a solid fish. Using the new Calcutta 300D and Loomis Crankbait, I went hard to keep the big girl out of the sticks, and we gently cradled her on board for a few photos and a measure – 97cm!
