NO FISH is worth losing your life over, according to Sydney fisherman Colin Freeman, but there is no harm in coming close.

Despite the death of Central Coast rock fisho Jesse Howes a week ago and hundreds of deaths before him, the 40-year-old was spotted dangerously close to raging 4m waves at the Bronte headland last week – without a life jacket.

The professional fishing guide said although rock fishing is “a terrible way to go” mandatory life jackets are not the answer.

“I’ve got a flotation jacket – and I thought about wearing it this morning – but I left it in the car,” the Waverley man said.

“People in their lounge rooms say we should be wearing a life jacket.

“But when there is other people around like there is today, it is OK (not to wear one).”

There were 10 rock fishing deaths in NSW in 2013-14. Wyong, Lake Macquarie, Randwick, Kiama and Sydney’s northern beaches are among the state’s worst angling black spots.

Fifteen rock fisherman died fishing in the Randwick council area between 2004 and 2012, according to Surf Life Saving NSW.

A state government discussion paper published in 2013 said each drowning costs society $4.2 million and raised the prospect of a mandatory scheme to curb the toll. But despite the risks, Freeman said it is still the best sport.

“Fishing is about the rush, but you are also getting out and enjoying nature,” he said.

“So many people have lost the ability to fish – they are too busy drinking lattes and being on their PlayStations.

“I love getting on the bus after a morning of fishing.

“All the men in their suits are walking into work smelling like fish, and I’m heading home with dinner all ready to go. It’s great.”
