FISHERS across the NT are now heading out to their favourite run-off locations following the initial monsoonal downpours.
With the chance of plenty of rain in the next few days, water levels will again be on the rise. These flooding rains are great for the health of our waterways and provide fantastic habitat for a lot of our fish species to breed and grow.
This is great if you want to catch fish, but please remember the rising water levels also provide greater access for saltwater crocodiles to move into new areas as they look to make the most of the abundant food supply and new territory.
This heightened activity on the NT waterways is likely to bring people and crocodiles closer and increase the risk of an attack. If you are planning on heading out fishing, whether from a boat or on the shore, remember you will be entering crocodile habitats.
Your feedback is important in reducing the risk of crocodile attacks across the Top End. If you witness or encounter a crocodile that is behaving aggressively or has moved into a location that makes it a threat to human safety, please report it to the Crocodile Management Team on 8999 4691 or 0419 822 859 (Darwin) and 8973 8888 or 0407 958 405 (Katherine) or at parksandwildlife.nt.gov.au/becrocwise/sightings/report_sighting.
