I COULDN’T catch many winter sea barramundi in July.
This is not because of the colder water – it doesn’t matter whether the water temperature is cold or not. Barramundi must eat to live, even in the cold water.
I don’t know what has happened in Darwin Harbour to make fishing harder at my normal locations.
In my case, barramundi won’t take hard body lures in our shallows recently.
Some people recommended I use soft plastic prawn or shrimp lures for catching winter barramundi.
I don’t know whether prawns are more familiar to winter barramundi in Darwin Harbour.
On the other hand, I don’t know whether mullet have been less familiar to winter barramundi this year.
I think that the total number of mullet is getting smaller in Darwin Harbour.
I haven’t seen large groups of mullet in our shallows recently.
I expected that I could catch many barramundi this year because we had a very nice monsoon rainy season. But I haven’t caught many barramundi so far.
But I still can catch many small trevally, bream, flathead and whiting using prawn bait.
Maybe the habitat of large groups of mullet has been changed by something changing in Darwin Harbour.
But it’s not quite that simple. Maybe something irregular has happened in the Daly River also.
In addition, I don’t know whether Darwin Harbour has been stocked with larval barramundi or not recently.
I didn’t catch any winter barramundi last time I fished.
I only caught a flathead with Zerek Live Shrimp.
