I HAVE returned from a four- week driving holiday to SA with my family.

We had a great time even though the weather was unusually poor for this time of year. The weather was so poor in fact that during our eight-day stay at Coffin Bay I only managed to get out once for a fish.

I ended up heading out wide off Coffin Bay with my good mates John Fraser and Tumby Tom in John’s 8m boat.

The weather was sensational in the morning as we headed out to try and target a few southern bluefin tuna, a fish I had never caught before.

As we approached some offshore islands we noticed some birds feeding. As we neared the feeding birds we soon noticed some nice tuna breaking the surface as well.

Immediately we commenced trolling and it was not long before we had a triple hook-up on tuna.

My Shimano Stradic screamed as the tuna headed off on a blinding first run.

Tom and John also fought their fish and we managed to land them all after a couple of mishaps along the way.

Tom and John’s tuna were around 15kg, but my first SBT weighed in over 18kg and was a sensational solid looking fish.

The small tuna school continued to feed and we soon had another triple hook-up which resulted in similar size tuna landed. What a great start to the day.

We decided to head out wider and chase some samsons and kingies around Rocky Island. I had never caught either of these species before.

By the time we reached Rocky the wind had come up and it was quite rough.

However, we persisted with jigging and trolling around the area to no avail.

We ended up burleying and drifting along the northern face of the island and having fun on light spin gear landing numerous silver trevally and monster sweep up to 3kg.

As the afternoon approached large storms appeared over the mainland to the north of us and so we headed back in.

On the way back I managed to land a 30kg gummy shark which capped off an enjoyable day on the water.
