I ATTENDED the Humminbird and Minn Kota talk held at the Palmerston Game Fishing Club house on Wednesday night.
It was a great night and many turned up to learn more about electronics and how to use them to greater effect.
I took particular notice of how to fine tune the Humminbird side and down imaging.
Justin Welsh from Humminbird was the main speaker for the night and he left no stone unturned when explaining how to use your sounder and GPS.
He spoke for well over an hour and much was learned.
He also introduced the new Humminbird Onix series which is sure to impress with its new touchscreen technology and easy-to-use menus.
One of the new features includes Autochart, which allows you to actively plot your own chart of a particular area you are fishing, like a creek in Darwin Harbour.
This can then be overlayed and saved on to your Navionics chart for future reference.
Another amazing technology I was particularly interested in was the new I-pilot Link system that allows you to control your electric motor through your Humminbird unit.
Quality Marine are a Humminbird Pro Store which means you can drop in and see them if you are interested in purchasing a Humminbird unit or Minn Kota electric motor and you will receive an extra 12 months on top of the standard two-year warranty.
They have a sale on at the moment with all Minn Kota motors 20 per cent off and Humminbird sounders 10 per cent off, except 300 series and down until Saturday, September 6. So drop in for a great deal or ring them on 8947 2066 while stocks last.
In regards to fishing, GTs have been turning up in local land-based areas around Darwin, including East and Lee points. They have also been caught around in-shore reefs near Dundee Beach as well as around the Vernon Islands.
Many of these fish have been landed on large poppers retrieved at speed on spin tackle. However, a few have also been landed on barra gear and they provide great sport on this lighter tackle.
I recently landed one around 12kg on my Curado which took around 20 minutes to land on 20lb Finns braid.
