Barra will chase mullet and we’ll chase barra

This week will see me compete in my second Kakadu Klash on the South Alligator River.

Last year was great fun and we did quite well, finishing in sixth position.

This year we are definitely aiming a little higher with high hopes of winning the event.

But with an extremely poor wet season so far, the fishing will undoubtedly be tough and probably similar to conditions fished two years ago when very few fish were landed by competitors over the three days of fishing.

The Klash is fished over three days and each day the largest legal barramundi is recorded and photographed by the team before release.

The largest barramundi from each day is then added up to give the team total for the comp. Generally if you land a barra over 80cm each day then you are well in the hunt to win this competition.

To be in contention you need to land a legal barra each day of the comp.

If you miss a day it is extremely difficult to come back from there.

I will be hoping to find a few nice fish like I did on similar tides a week and a half ago on the South Alligator.

The tides will be building during the comp.

And there will be plenty of run by the last day, with tides well over 7m.

Hopefully the big tides will bring plenty of schools of mullet with them and therefore plenty of big barra. Brook and Nourlangie creeks will once again be popular with competitors as they were the go-to creeks in the comp last year.

I will be fishing with good mates Trevor Robb and Steve Trembath, who have fished many Klashes before and have also been successful in winning before.

With plenty of local knowledge and experience between us, we are feeling confident.

But a little luck never goes astray!

I will report on the Klash in my column next week and will hopefully have some good news on the results.
