Former AFL footballer Hamish Simpson and retired Darwin sports legend Morgan Hartney have been filming six-part television series Fishing the Wild in East Arnhem over the past two months.
“Between Hamish and I we’d have 30 years experience coming up here to Arnhem Land,” Mr Hartney said.
Plans for the series started when the pair met working on a pearl farm 10 years ago.
“Back then, all we wanted to do was fish the north,” Mr Hartney said.
“We wanted to highlight the fishing, as well as the generosity and kindness of the outstations and Aboriginal communities up here.”
The series is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of viewers when it airs in May.
“We want to show Arnhem Land in more depth than ever before,” Mr Hartney said.
The two mates will wrap up filming this week.
Mr Hartney said they’d had good hauls of barramundi, queen fish, giant trevally and blue trevally.
“There’s definitely no shortage of fish up here.”
