A great family trip that reeled in our dinner

I RECENTLY fished with my two lads around the Vernon Islands, jigging around reef edges for assorted reef fish and pelagics.

Reidys jigs and Spanyid vibes worked well and we landed plenty of species.

The most prolific were stripeys and cod.

We also landed a few coral trout and some nice-sized blue bone tusk fish.

On one particular bombie we had a great time with numerous trevallies up to 3kg swooping on our lures with gusto.

After landing a few of these Sam hooked up on a much better fish that caused him a bit of grief before it finally succumbed to the young angler.

It was a 5kg golden trevally and a good fish to land in amongst the reef.

Not long after this he hooked up on a monstrous GT around 10kg which scoffed his jig right at the boat.

Even though we had drifted about 30m from the bombie, the GT peeled line off his spin reel at an alarming rate and soon pinged him off in the reef.

Not to be outdone by his older brother, Kym hooked up on a solid jack on his Spanyid vibe.

It too headed for the safety of the reef, but Kym managed to keep it out and land it after a torrid fight.

At 42cm it was his first jack and a great one to take home for dinner.
