Gone are the days when bridal colour palettes were composed of varying shades of white. Falling in love, after all, is a colourful affair—so why not let your attire and jewellery show it?

You can, of course, choose to walk down the aisle in a coloured wedding dress (champagne, lilacs and fuchsias, for example, have been growing in popularity), but your taste for the non-traditional can be exercised as early as the proposal. A white diamond might be seen as the default choice for an engagement ring, but more celebrities than ever are opting for coloured stones. Take Princess Kate of Wales, for example, whose sapphire-and-diamond ring has inspired countless brides-to-be, or actress Lily Collins, whose pink gem sits bezel-set on a vintage-style gold band.

Posh and Becks’ elaborate wedding of course came off the back of an elaborate engagement. But, Victoria Beckham’s glamorous life has seen the Spice Girl receive a rumoured 15 engagement rings. A plethora of colours and styles, this emerald ring given in 2007 is one of the most dazzling.

Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel’s ‘Folie de Pres’ (which translates literally to “madness up close” in French) ring from Van Cleef & Arpels consists of three floral clusters, including a central configuration of purple sapphires surrounding a white diamond. Two pink sapphires frame the flowers, and the gemstones sit on a band plated with white gold. 

Lady Gaga

When Lady Gaga got engaged to Christian Carino, Carino gave her an elaborate coloured-stone engagement ring, rumoured to be worth north of US$1 million . The ring featured an oval-cut pink stone, likely either a pink diamond or pink sapphire, which was nestled within a ring of round-cut white diamonds, all of which was set in platinum.

Eva Longoria

You don’t need a close look at Eva Longoria’s engagement ring to appreciate that magnificent eight-carat oval-cut ruby, designed by Jean Dousset to sit in a halo of white diamonds on a pavé diamond band.

Halle Berry

Halle Berry’s engagement ring, given to her by Olivier Martinez, features a Colombian emerald flanked by two diamonds.

Kate, Princess of Wales

Princess Kate’s engagement ring once belonged to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana of Wales. Purchased from Garrard, the centrepiece of the ring is a 12-carat Sri Lankan sapphire, encircled by 18 diamonds and set on an 18-carat gold band. The design itself was inspired by a brooch created for Queen Victoria by her husband, Prince Albert, as a wedding gift. 

Lily Collins

Collins’s ring features a rose-cut, four-carat diamond, bezel set into a gold band, and was designed by Irene Neuwirth. It was given to her by her American film director and screenwriter fiance Charlie McDowel.

Princess Eugenie

Princess Eugenie’s coloured engagement ring isn’t blue like Kate’s, but features an oval-cut, pink-orange Padparadscha sapphire, encircled by a floral white diamond halo. 

Dakota Johnson

While any engagement with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin is yet to be formally confirmed, Johnson has been spotted wearing a sizable emerald ring on her ring finger. Cut in a fitting emerald-cut, the ring appears to be set in a platinum pavé band.

Penélope Cruz

Another celebrity with a sapphire engagement ring, Penélope Cruz’s three-carat, oval-cut blue sapphire is set in a white diamond halo and sits on a gold band. 

Rita Ora

Rita Ora announced her engagement to Taika Waititi with a square-cut, 10-carat Colombian green emerald, set in a diamond halo and on a yellow gold band.

Megan Fox 

Custom designed by her fiancée Machine Gun Kelly, Megan Fox stated that her toi et moi ring, made up of a teardrop-shaped Colombian emerald and diamond—stones corresponding to Fox and Kelly’s birthstones—represented “two halves of the same soul forming the obscure heart that is our love.”

Heidi Klum

Designed by partner Tom Kaulitz, Heidi Klum’s ring features a four-carat, cushion-cut teal sapphire, featuring a white diamond halo and two cushion-cut diamonds on either side. 

Katy Perry

Katy Perry’s floral engagement ring is as sweet as they come, a white diamond flower with an oval-cut, ruby centre.

Ashlee Simpson

Is this what you expected Ashlee Simpson’s engagement ring to look like? We were certainly surprised. This Edwardian style piece consists of a five-carat marquise-cut diamond, framed by rubies and over 140 smaller diamonds. 

Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark

Two emerald-cut rubies flank the diamond in the centre of Princess Mary’s engagement ring, which itself is a reference to the Danish flag.
