YOU’RE never too old to learn how to hula hoop, insist The Burning Circus owners Trinket and Brad Morris.
The couple is teaching circus tricks to Darwinites, and say anyone can learn to hoop.
“A lot of people have the misconception that only kids should hula hoop,” Ms Morris said. “We don’t think — as long as you’re mobile — that anyone’s too old to hula hoop.”
Ms Morris has been hooping for about 12 years, but discovered the sport’s physical benefits after having daughter Kaia 20 months ago.
“It’s so good for your body, it’s an all-over body exercise — it’s good for your legs, your tummy, your posture,” she said. “You can burn 210 calories in 30 minutes.”
Mr Morris said hooping wasn’t a feminine sport, and encouraged blokes to try. “Some of the guy hoopers are the best hoopers,” he said.
Hula Hoop classes are $20 for a one hour session, on Monday nights in Stuart Park. Lessons are catered to each participant’s skill level.
