A PHOTO of a woman who had a double mastectomy before having the area covered in tattoos by a Darwin artist has gone viral with almost 200,000 ‘likes’ in less than 24 hours.

Darwin City Tattoos artist Mim d’Abbs took to Facebook to post a before and after photo of her client, who has so far chosen to remain anonymous but gave permission for the pictures to be used online, on Wednesday afternoon.

The before image showed the client’s bare chest and scars from a double mastectomy. The after shot revealed a striking floral design tattooed over the area.

“Today I tattooed something very different,” Ms d’Abbs posted on Facebook.

“My apologies to those that find this confrontational, but my client and I both thought it should be posted.

“This is a tattoo over reconstructive surgery, post a double mastectomy.

“Seeing my client smile, made this possibly the most important tattoo I’ve done to date ... I thank her for wanting to show people what can be done with art and skin, and for allowing me to do it.”

The post has since been ‘liked’ on Facebook more than 175,000 times and shared over 13,000.

Ms d’Abbs said she has been contacted by news sources wanting an interview with her client from as far away as London.

Tattoo artist Mim d’Abbs said she was “blown away” by the response to her post.

“I couldn’t believe it,” she told the NT News.

Ms d’Abbs said her client, a woman in her late 40s, was “overwhelmed” by the positive response from around the globe.

Facebook user Diane Mitchell wrote: “You shouldn’t apologise. If people can’t handle it, it’s their problem. You have done an amazing job and I assume, have made her feel beautiful after such a huge life changing situation. What an amazing woman.”

Ms D’Abbs said the artwork process took around 3.5 hours.
