DRIVE down any street in Darwin’s southern suburbs at the moment and you could find a trove of treasure.
Hidden among broken fridges and worn tyres, Top Enders are throwing out perfectly good furniture and white goods in the first Darwin council Pre-Cyclone Clean Up.
Larrakeyah residents David Smith and Dab Shah were out for a walk when they discovered a working fitness bike. Less than 100m away were chairs, a couch, a suitcase, a fan and a pair of crutches.
“It might take you a day driving around, but you could set up your whole house at no cost,” Mr Smith said.
“There’s some pretty terrible things but there is good stuff out as well.
“And some stuff might need some repair but it’s still good.”
Mr Shah spotted people picking up a freebie or two.
“Just the other day, when I went out, there was a mattress and bed on the other side of the road, and when I came home 10 minutes later it was gone,” he said.
Council will collect the hard rubbish tomorrow to be sorted for junk and goods.
