Darwin celebrates Thai New Year at Darwin Waterfront

Territorians looking for a taste of international culture came across a Darwin’s Thai festival at Darwin Waterfront yesterday.

TERRITORIANS looking for a taste of international culture came across a Darwin’s Thai festival at Darwin Waterfront yesterday, celebrating the Thai new year.

With Muay Thai, cooking demonstrations and dance performances, NT Thai Association president Tou Saramat Ruchkaew said, with international borders closed, these festivals were the best way for locals and expats to enjoy and indulge in international culture.

“A lot of people are missing Thailand because most of us have been travelling to Thailand every year During COVID-19,” she said.

“We have a slice of Thailand right here on your doorstep and it’s safe to be here too.

“It’s been a really good crowd and the weather’s been working on our in our favour as well.”

Traditional dancer Similan Prasitsang said the festival gave an opportunity for Thai people living in Darwin to share their culture and traditions.

“We can our traditions and through our dance performance,” she said.

“It’s a showcase of the traditional dances and palace of the traditional dresses.”
