THE rainbow crossing installed at the corner of Knuckey and Smith St for Pride Week will stay for at least another 12 months following a decision of Darwin City Council last night.

Chan Ward Alderman Emma Young asked for it to stay. The costs of maintaining the brightly coloured strip will be monitored over the year.

The total cost of the installation of the rainbow markings was around $7500, with a major component being traffic management. The estimated cost to retain and re-mark the rainbow markings will cost around $6500 with the major component being traffic management.

As part of the retention of the crossing Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis has floated an idea of turning CBD intersections into street art based around the Territory’s cultural heritage.

“Just imagine a Larrakia painting, Chinese character for CNY, a Greek sponge diver’s helmet, a Balinese painting,” Mr Vatskalis said.
