SPOTTING a crocodile isn’t exactly what you expect when you go for your morning walk around Durack lakes.

But that’s exactly what happened to Property Council of Australia executive director Ruth Palmer who spotted what she estimates to be a 2m freshwater crocodile lurking on the surface of a lake.

Ms Palmer was on her morning walk, listening to the radio, when she spotted what she at first assumed to be a log but upon closer inspection realised it to be

“I was on my morning walk around 6am when I noticed what I first thought to be a log lying on top of the weeds in the lake,” she said.

“But then I went ‘oh wait, that’s not a log, that’s a croc’ and it was, a big one about 2m only a couple of metres away from the edge.

“The weeds are a real problem in Durack lakes and if one is on top of them then who knows what else could be lurking below them.

“City of Palmerston are all aware and have reported it but with the Wet Season coming in now it probably won’t be the last.

“It’s just a further warning that when out on your walk you need to be Crocwise and remain vigilant particularly when out with your dogs.”

Following the sighting the Palmerston Council have notified the NT Croc Wise team who have placed warning signs and are undertaking surveys around Durack’s lake 4.
