SMAUG the crocodile looks like something out of nightmares, but you’ve probably seen him before.

The 5m croc has been in the movie Blackwater, as well as a number of documentaries with National Geographic and The Documentary Channel.

The most recent photo of him eating a dead wallaby, on the front cover of today’s NT News, went viral on Monday.

Adam Britton said Smaug was usually fed frozen chickens.

But every now and then someone will bring him a special treat.

“Friends and colleagues will sometimes donate food for us — anyone who’s related to animal or feral pig control, sometimes they can get us a nice pig,” he said.

“This one was a wallaby that was found at the end of last week.”

Dr Britton built an enclosure for Smaug when the BBC natural history department requested it.

“They were doing a new documentary with David Attenborough called Life in Cold Blood, and they wanted specific shots including crocs mating underwater,” he said.

“These are shots that would be impossible to get in the wild.

“If you’ve ever seen an underwater shot of a saltwater crocodile, there’s a good chance it’s Smaug,” Dr Britton said.
