Coles shopper baffled over 'strange detail' in pumpkins for sale

"They're scraping the bottom of the barrel to make money."

How to make pumpkin and chilli dip

A woman was left baffled after spotting unusually-sized pumpkins in the vegetable aisle at Coles recently.

But they weren't oversized carving pumpkins for Halloween...

Quite the opposite.

The Aussie woman, Lex, took to TikTok and referred to them as "2D" pumpkins due to their incredibly thin appearance.

"Why are you so thin?"

"What the actual f**k?" she began her clip, picking up one of the butternut pumpkin 'halves'.

She turns it on its side and it's no more than an inch thick and looks to be more like a third of a pumpkin.

"Are these pumpkins or are these 2D pumpkins?" she asks.

"Why are you so thin? I don't understand. Is it selling the skin of the pumpkin or is this what we're really going to make our dinner with, Coles?"

She then calls the supermarket giant "money-hungry" and claims it's "scraping the bottom of the barrel" to make money off customers.

According to the Coles website, the pumpkin halves are $3.15 and are meant to weigh approximately 700g grams each.

"Where is the middle?"

Fellow shoppers were just as confused in the comments, with one saying they'd "flip out" if they saw that in their local Coles.

"It looks like it’s been cut into three, not half, most are missing the seeds. I’ll bet the middle bit is cut up for packs of pieces cut up pack," one person theorised.

"Looks like the sliced-off edge - where is the middle?" someone else echoed.

Then one ex-supermarket employee claimed, "This usually happens when someone can't cut the pumpkin properly in half. They do it and pray that no one notices it!"

Someone else said they felt ripped off when they did a recent Click and Collect order and got a pumpkin this size.

"Tried to make pumpkin soup... didn't make much! 😂" they laughed.

In defence of the skinny pumpkins

But not everyone was disappointed by the small pumpkin, with some saying it's actually "a great idea."

"It's actually pretty good for a family like mine where only I eat pumpkin," one mun replied.

Lex responded: "This makes me happy if it helps a solo pumpkin eater!"

"Not money hungry. It’s a good idea. I, for one, only use a small amount each week, so there is a bit that goes off and thrown out," a second said.

"The alternative for pumpkins that are 'too small' would be to bin or reject them. Surely this is better," one sustainability-minded commenter pointed out.

Then other people said the pumpkins would be great for elderly people or those who just need "a small amount" for a particular recipe.
