THE Darwin Local Court unveiled a shiny new set of balls on Monday after growing several pairs during the weekend.

The bollards were installed as part of a security revamp to the legal precinct and are designed to prevent anyone driving cars or other vehicles into the courthouse.

Director of Courts Chris Cox said the large round shape was chosen for the aesthetics of the design and to deter people using them as a place to put discarded cigarettes.

Mr Cox said the bollards were a security upgrade that would make the building safer for all court users but were not erected in response to any specific threat.

“There was no specific threat identified that prompted the bollards to be built, but their construction was part of responsible threat management,” he said.

“They do not detract from the ease with which regular court users will be able to access the building.

“In today’s world it is wise to ensure people using buildings like the Local Court are kept safe from potential threats.”

The court did not reveal how much the new orbs cost.
