Hotdogs are a deli favourite for families, and for good reason! Sure, you might not know 100% what’s in them, but they’re delicious.
And, the same could be said for their smaller counterparts.
However, after one Aussie mum took to Facebook to start the debate, people from all over the country have realised that we don’t all call them the same thing - with one name in particular more controversial than most.

Another great Aussie debate!
Aussie mum and content creator Oh So Busy Mum has taken to Facebook to ask what other people are calling ‘cheerios’ - and we’re not talking about the cereal.
“What do you call these? I’ve grown up calling them cheerios in Queensland,” she wrote in her post.
Officially, the product is called a cocktail frankfurt, though it’s very clear not everyone agrees.

What do you call it?
Many commenters on the post, also from Queensland, agreed with the poster on the topic, also calling them cheerios.
“Cheerios (also QLD)” one person said.
“I’ve grown up calling them cheerios in Queensland,” said another.
“I have lived in QLD all my life and grew up to call them cheerios,” a third agreed.
Others said cocktail frankfurt was the only correct name.
“This is an ongoing fight in my house. My partner is from QLD and calls the cheerios but I’m from NSW and they are frankfurts.. we live in NSW so he has to change his way,” said one commenter.
“I also called these Cheerios growing up in Queensland but when I moved to New South Wales I asked for Cheerios at the deli when grocery shopping and was looked at very confused and directed to the cereal aisle, they are now cocktail frankfurts!” said another person.
“Cheerios how strange I never heard that in my life. Isn’t that a cereal lol I’m in NSW and we call them cocktail frankfurt’s,” another added.
But, a third contender also emerged - and not everyone was sold.
“Cheerios??? Never ever heard that before!! I’m in SA and call them little boys,” said one commenter.
“We called them little boys in Sydney but I’m not sure that’s PC these days,” said another.
“Growing up in Victoria and NSW we called them little boys. Nowadays I say cocktail frankfurts when in public but the old name of little boys sometimes still comes out as that’s what they were!” another person added.
It might not be that weird after all
Needless to say, commenters were completely divided over the use of the term ‘little boys’, with some calling it completely inappropriate, and others saying it’s no big deal.
“I felt it was inappropriate teaching my daughter to call them ‘little boys’ so we call them little red sausages,” said one mum.
“Sorry I have always called them ‘little boys’ and at 66 years of age I’m not about to change. I have never thought it derogatory to boys,” another argued.
Another said that regardless of the real meaning, the phrase itself gives them ‘the ick’: “It gives me the ick to hear people call them ‘little boys’ haha. Like do you not hear what you’re saying? Haha.”
However, for those concerned about the origin of the term, it seems it’s not as creepy as it sounds.
“All these people carrying on about how little boy is creepy have their minds in the creepy place,” said one commenter.
“The name was coined from English cockney slang to mirror saveloy - the type of sausage a frank developed from!”
