Aussies shares solution to 'annoying' supermarket bag problem

"Why don't they do this already?!" the Sydney dad asked.

Shopper Slams Coles and Woolworths over single-use paper bagsA frustrated shopper has taken to social media to vent about an "annoying" problem at Coles and Woolworths.

“I can’t be the only one that has dozens and dozens of bags from Coles and Woolworths,” Sydney dad Tod Govegan says at the start of a TikTok while standing among a pile of supermarket bags on his floor.

And judging by the 11,000 views and 250 comments, he definitely isn’t alone.

It’s a common issue for many Australian households — bringing home reusable bags from the supermarket, only to toss them into the recycling without ever reusing them again.

Then, the next time you go to the shops, you buy even more bags and so the cycle perpetuates.

However, Tod has an idea that could help tackle the growing problem.

The solution to the reusable bag conundrum

“Why don’t they have a spot where I can take all my bags back, that are still usable, and just leave them at Coles or Woolies near the counter?” he says.

That way, people won’t have to buy bags but rather just reuse other people’s reusable bags.

“I’ve got hundreds of them,” he admits, “but I just forget to take them to the shops and I feel bad recycling them because you can use them but I don’t and it’s annoying, and I want a solution.”

He mentioned that it mainly becomes a problem when he impulsively shops or does top-up shopping to get things he needs for that day only.

"Great idea!"

In the comments, some people supported his idea, with one person saying: “I also have about $419 worth of bags,” while another said, “Great idea! They really need to do this.”

“Your place looks like my place,” someone else revealed. “This is a perfectly good solution, why can’t they have a storage bin that people leave their bags in?!”

“It’s probably for health reasons,” another viewer replied before others jumped in with alternative solutions.

“Take them to a charity shop, they reuse them,” someone noted.

“Yep, or your local Church charity bin,” another added.

“I use them as my recycling bin,” a commenter said.

“Just start dumping them at the entrance to your local supermarket. Surely people would take them,” concluded someone else.
