The shocking truth behind your 'clean' tea towels

Despite regular washing and rotation, the mum discovered that her microfibre tea towels were harbouring a shocking amount of dirt.

She explained, "These dishcloths have been put through the wash and we regularly rotate them but I still felt they were a bit stinky."

"A friend suggested boiling them with a few drops of dishwashing liquid as a degreaser," she continued.

The mum then shared a photo of the tea towels sitting in a saucepan of murky water.

"This is the second round, and they might need a third and fourth," she said.

After trying the experiment, the mum shared her own tips, saying it works best when the water is boiled over 60 degrees in a large pot and that vinegar could work better than dishwashing liquid.

"I do this weekly"

The post sparked a wave of responses from cleaning enthusiasts in the group.

Many were amazed at how effective the trick was, while others noted that they had been using this technique for years.

"I do this weekly to get rid of that 'dirty' smell," said one.

Another wrote, "I still boil my dishcloths and tea towels. Taught by my grandmother — an old school practice to keep them sanitised."

Then other members shared their variations of the method.

A few recommended boiling the tea towels before a regular machine wash.

"Boil, rinse in the sink, boil, rinse and then machine wash," was a common suggestion.

"Machines these days are very good, but actually boiling gets any residual dirt and build-up of detergents out," claimed someone else.

"I throw mine in the dishwasher"

Then others shared completely different approaches. "I boil my dishcloths a couple of times a week covered with water and a few drops of dish liquid in the microwave for eight minutes. Rinse well and dry in the outdoors," one woman shared.

Another added, "I throw mine in the dishwasher, which also fluffs the fibres up again."

Apart from tea towels, some group members extended the cleaning method to towels, bed sheets, and even work uniforms, to remove strong odours and germs.
