A fed up homeowner in Perth has laid down the ground rules with dumpster divers looking to cash in on recyclable cans.
People have been digging through residents’ recycling bins to snag their cans and bottles to cash in on the “return and earn” scheme that gives 10 cents per item.
But one person has decided to send a very clear message to the people rummaging through their bin.
Pictures shared to a Facebook group in Perth showed one homeowner had written a message on their bin lid.
“10 cent warriors f*** off,” they wrote.
“All cans and bottles have been recycled and I have been off the p***.”
Other notes on the bins called people digging through the trash “maggots” and told them to “stop scabbing”, according to the Bell Tower Times Facebook post.
Some said the act of digging through another person’s bin should be illegal, labelling it a “revolting” act.
Others said the resident had overreacted and needed to do some breath work.
“It’s sad that someone has to go through residential bins to have some money. This agro is uncalled for,” one commented.
Another added: “If you’re throwing it out anyway, who cares if someone else makes a couple bucks off it?”
A similar debate was sparked on the Sydney Reddit thread. A social media user asked how others felt about the concept as it was common in their area.
“I kinda get it if it’s bin day and the bins are on the street, but when they’re inside my property line in the little cubby spot, people are letting themselves into my front garden and doing it there, which kinda gives me the ick,” the user complained.
He was particularly outraged when someone dumped the bin in his yard.
Social media users expressed their mixed feelings on the issue. Some said they had no issue and even left a separate box filled with cans next to their bin. Others slammed it.
“Yeah I don’t mind them going through the bins on bin night. Just don’t leave a mess. Stepping onto property and going through a bin cubby is crossing the line, so to speak,” one said.
One added: “Yeah if I put the bins on the street, I agree it’s fair game (as long as they are quiet and tidy) but I don’t like people entering my property for this.”
“I just started hoarding my cans in the garage to take to the recycling joint myself. The dude stopped looking through my bin soon enough,” one social media user revealed.
Another social media user said: “Every god damn Wednesday. It’s a bit … weird. But the likelihood is they’re being exploited and/or it’s the only work they can get.”
