INDEPENDENT candidate for Wanguri Shauna Mounsey has a name you won’t be able to get out of your head — not after you hear her jingle, anyway.

Ms Mounsey has taken a page out of the politics of days long gone and produced a catchy ditty that she hopes attracts attention to her campaign.

The song’s infectious chorus repeats the lines: “Shauna Mounsey! For the new beginning ... Shauna Mounsey, Member for Wanguri! Shauna Mounsey! Let’s unite and build our dreams, let’s shout and be proud!”

“Everyone laughs and some people think it’s cheesy,” she said. “But it’s been a good response. I think the last political jingle may have been Gough Whitlam’s in the 70s.”

Ms Mounsey said her friends at the Filipino Association encouraged her to make a jingle, telling her all the pollies in the Philippines do it. They wrote and performed the song quickly, after she sent a few of the key messages she wanted to get out to the public. The end result is New Beginning.

“It’s grown on me and I think it’s good,” she said. And the song has already garnered a play on Territory FM.

Ms Mounsey, a small-business owner, lawyer and kickboxer who grew up in Wanguri, said she decided to run because she was at a point in her life where she wanted to give back to the Territory that raised her.

“There are some good people who get into politics ... but what they lack are the qualifications,” she said. “I know I have the ability to make change and that’s what I do.”

And there still might be a video to accompany the song, but that would be a lot of vision of her boxing and kickboxing which might be a bit confronting, she said.
