Five more people test positive for coronavirus in the NT

Chief Minister Michael Gunner said the new rules would be enforced in the NT from Friday afternoon.

It comes after the NT confirmed its first remote cases of coronavirus after a couple from Harts Range tested positive on Thursday after arriving from overseas.

There are at least three international flights scheduled to arrive at Darwin International Airport on Saturday from Singapore, Denpasar Bali and Dili.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner and NT Police Commissioner Jamie Chalker will provide an update about coronavirus restrictions in the NT.

“For any future international arrivals we have now taken the responsibility for quarantining out of your hands and putting them in ours.

“The Prime Minister said this would come into effect nationally from no longer than midnight (Saturda), here in the Territory we will do it sooner.

“So if you are landing here ... from overseas you will have to spend another two weeks in a hotel on us.

“For those who are intending to land in a transit city like Sydney or Melbourne before you come to the Territory, sorry but your trip stops there. You won’t be coming here.

“If you arrive from overseas in an interstate city you will stay there in controlled quarantine for 14 days.

“Then and only then will you be permitted to come the Territory, and even then you will need to do the 14 days of self quarantine required by anyone coming from interstate.”

Mr Gunner said there were a “significant” number of empty hotel rooms in Darwin at the moment that will be considered to keep the travellers in quarantine.

Being mindful of the Territorian taxpayer here, it would be a very low room rate,” he said.

“We’ll be securing rooms now to be able to detain people in them.”
