Hannah Curran vents outrage at Gateway Shopping Centre Darwin Bras N Things advert in social media post

A Darwin woman’s outrage over an underwear store promoting its products at a shopping centre has fired up social media users. Let us know what you think of the Facebook user’s irate post.

Woman complains about revealing Bras N Things ad

A local woman has become the butt of social media jokes after she voiced her disgust for an underwear advert at a Darwin shopping mall.

Gateway Shopping Centre hosts popular underwear and lingerie store Bras N Things, which has become known for celebrating the female body in all shapes and sizes.

However, Palmerston resident Hannah Curran said the national chain had taken its advertising a step too far.

The 43-year-old took to Facebook on Monday after she was shocked by the “erotic” images and video displayed outside the store.

“Shame on you Bras N Things Palmerston gateway,” she wrote.

“Bras N Things head office and Gateway Shopping Centre NT are allowing this in public viewing from outside the shop for any age to see.”

Ms Curran said Bras N Things and the shopping centre should ensure these images were only visible from inside the store.

“My main concern is children easily being able to see these sexualised erotic images,” she told NT News.

“We as a society must protect children and not normalise and promote any pornography, sexual or erotic images.

“I was disgusted that Gateway Shopping Centre would approve of such advertising when they promote their shopping centre as being family-friendly.”

A Gateway Shopping Centre spokeswoman said the ad “was undertaken by the store for the store”.

“We take our duty of care very seriously,” she said.

“We would recommend the customer make a direct complaint to Bras N Things.

“But if we did receive a complaint our first action would be to contact the retailer.”

The Facebook post quickly attracted more than 100 comments after being shared in the infamous Darwin – Have a Whinge page with users promptly labelling Ms Curran a “Karen”.

“Goodness another Karen. Have you been to the swimming pools or the beach? Get over yourself,” one person wrote.

Another woman added: “I don’t have a problem with it at all tbh and feel that celebrating woman’s butts that look fabulous is amazing.”

Ms Curran said she was not deterred from the plethora of “negative messages” and hoped her post would inspire others to speak up.

“I’ve developed a think skin,” she said

“It doesn’t faze me. I know many people agree with me who don’t comment on Facebook for their own reasons and I’m proud of my morals and values.”

A Perth shopping mall came under fire last month after a kids’ activity was hosted near lingerie store Honey Birdette.

Activist group Collective Shout said children who attended the advertised winter wonderland-themed activities were exposed to sexualised and bondage-themed advertising.

“This is what kids will see when they go to Lendlease Lakeside Joondalup shopping centre for school holiday events,” the group said on its Facebook page.

“How many kids will have to walk past these pornified and degrading representations of women to attend their school holiday activity?

“We’ve censored this image for you, but Honey Birdette is showing kids the uncensored version, featuring women’s exposed genitals – and Lakeside Joondalup is allowing it.”

Responding to the complaints, the shopping centre told news.com.au the holiday activities were hosted by an independent client about 50 metres from the lingerie store.

They could be accessed without having to pass the Honey Birdette store, the centre said.

Mr Curran supported the statements made by Collective Shout and said “we must all continue to speak out.”

Bras N Things has been contacted for comment.
