THE Watson family got more than they bargained for when they found a 3.1m croc in their backyard.

The croc had been lurking for three weeks and the croc catchers from the Croc Management Team were able to safely remove it on Tuesday.

Heidi Watson said her two kids were excited to have witnessed the croc capture before heading off to a day of learning at school.

“My kids thought it was very educational; they had a great day with all their friends talking about it,” Ms Watson said.

“They were just happy that they were safe. I hope that other people can learn from this lesson.”

She said she believed the crocodile had negotiated several croc traps on the Elizabeth River and made its way up an estuary towards her mother’s property at Bees Creek. She said it was a timely reminder not to let your guard down, even during the dry season.

A Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture spokeswoman confirmed the team had removed the crocodile from the area.

The spokeswoman reiterated Ms Watson’s croc safety message.

“Saltwater crocodiles live in both saltwater and freshwater areas of the Northern Territory and you should be crocwise whenever you are near or in a waterway in the Top End,” the spokeswoman said.

It isn’t the first time a Bees Creek resident has had a run in with a croc, with Coralie Myers in 2016 waking to find a croc had been dumped in her bathroom by an intruder.

The croc had its mouth taped up but its eyes uncovered and limbs free.

It was not clear why the croc was dumped in her family’s bathroom.
