MILLNER Primary School will be a major feature of Melbourne’s Little Big Shots Film Festival next month, with two films screening to a national audience.
Our Seasons from 2012, and last year’s Never Seen Anything Like It will show as part of a program of 105 short films and animations.
“I didn’t expect both films to get in, but it’s brilliant for the kids to get that real recognition of what they’re capable of,” animator and assistant teacher Al Oldfield said.
Our Seasons is a 10-minute feature made by the entire school cohort that details the six seasons as seen by indigenous peoples, students discussing the cycles of animals, plants and landscapes.
Never Seen Anything Like It is a 3½ -minute music clip to Territory artist Catherine Satour’s song, made by three Year 5/6 classes across two terms.
“(For the music clip), the first term was teaching animation skills like claymation, and using sand and charcoal; in the second term we made the visuals,” teacher Korin Lesh said.
“We used Stop Motion Pro ... we made a storyboard, and planned the story with drawings,” student Ronrick Patay said. Millner Primary School is no stranger to the festival, having won an award in 2012 with I’m A Green Tree Frog.
Many students on the Never Seen ... project have learnt the basics of animation since it was first introduced into art classes by Ms Lesh.
The 10th Little Big Shots Film Festival will screen in Melbourne from June 6 to 9, followed by a national tour.
