It’s been 12 years since actor Tom Felton last brought magic to the screen as Draco Malfoy – now he’s keen to be part of the highly-anticipated TV reboot of Harry Potter.
Potterheads around the world have been speculating about the reboot’s cast ever since Warner Bros. announced a TV series was being developed by HBO.
Felton, who filmed Uber Eats’ latest TV ad in Australia, said he “wouldn’t say no” to joining the show.
“I’m definitely going to be some dodgy extra in the background, with a huge beard on or something like that, whether they like it or not,” he said with a grin.
“It’s not something I’ve really thought about, but there’s so much in these books that obviously you can’t cram into a two-hour film so I imagine they’re going to have a lot of fun bringing some of the stuff that we didn’t have time to get into. So yeah, I’m very excited about that.”
The 35-year-old actor flew into Australia and filmed for Uber Eats across Sydney in Centennial Park, San Souci and Lakemba over three days.
Unlike other celebrities, he went unnoticed by the paparazzi which he attributes to being “scruffy” looking.
“I usually have a backwards cap and a skateboard, so [the paparazzi] just think, ‘Is that the geezer from…?’ And they don’t actually stop me,” he joked.
While Felton has visited Australia before — and one of his brothers lived here for six years — he wants to return and see the Gold Coast and Perth.
“I’ve got many more things on the list to do,” he said.
“They had to drag me to the airport [after shooting the commercial] – I really did not want to go home. But I’ll be back, don’t worry.”
One of Felton’s closest friends is fellow Harry Potter star Emma Watson, who penned the forward for the actor’s 2022 memoir, Beyond The Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard. It detailed how he overcame his alcohol addiction after going to rehab.
“Emma and I are very close – we got closer over the years really,” he said.
“She was one of the first people to read the book. She was very encouraging to say, ‘if you’re going to do this, you may as well do it properly and tell the whole story, not just the fluffy, nice bits’.”
Felton said the Harry Potter films have shaped him.
“It’s quite bizarre really, considering that we started shooting the films 22 years ago. Most fans that come up to me now when I’m on the Tube or the bus weren’t even born when the first film came out,” he said, laughing.
“It seems to be an ongoing thing that’s been passed down from generation to generation, which is really cool.”
