The creator of smash hit TV series The Boys has a message for the outspoken fans who have sparked a boycott of the latest series claiming the show had “gone woke”.

After season four debuted on Amazon Prime this month, the show found itself at the centre of a social media storm – and not just because of a wild sex scene.

For those not familiar with the show, it’s a dark and satirical exploration of the “what if Superman was evil” trope.

The main character of Homelander, has been used since season one as an allegory for themes including conservatism, toxic masculinity, patriotism, and the danger of unchecked power. In the latest season, it also becomes evident that he’s a not-so-subtle parallel to Donald Trump.

However, much of that appears to have gone over some angry viewers’ heads, who have seemingly only just understood the core message of the show, and they’re not happy about it.

In the first episode of season four, one particular scene has seemingly pushed the small but vocal minority into launching a boycott of the show all because a character has been revealed to be bisexual.

In response to the criticism, which has sparked the show’s first ever “rotten” audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, creator Eric Kripke has told them to “go watch something else” and get over it.

“I clearly have a perspective, and I’m not shy about putting that perspective in the show,” said the creator in response to the backlash. “Anyone who wants to call the show ‘woke’ or whatever, that’s OK. Go watch something else. But I’m certainly not going to pull any punches or apologise for what we’re doing.”

He added: “Some people who watch it think Homelander is the hero. What do you say to that? The show’s many things. Subtle isn’t one of them. So if that’s the message you’re getting from it, I just throw up my hands.”

After the first few episodes were released on Prime this month, social media platforms such as Twitter and Reddit were filled with angry comments bashing the show, with many claiming to have swithced off for good.

The Boys going full-woke for season 4 is the most expected yet disappointing thing,” ranted one fan, with the tweet getting thousands of retweets and comments in response, while a video on TikTok slamming writers for “making Frenchie gay” had been “liked” over a 100,000 times.

“It was really hard to get through watching just how bad it is now. It used to be so good. It would poke fun at the woke absurdities but now it’s become what they were making fun of,” complained another viral tweet. “I honestly don’t think I can get through watching it anymore. Sad to see.”

Some viewers have poked fun at the backlash, insisting the show has always been “woke”, with one saying: “I love the fact that dumbasses are just NOW calling The Boys woke. Like, it is amazing how stupid people really can be.”

“Did the people who are calling #theboys season 4 too woke or too political forget what show they are watching?” laughed another. “It’s always been political. It’s a parody. Imagine only just now realising you were being made fun of the whole time.”
