The sexy villains of cult 90s soap Melrose Place are making a comeback with troubled actor Heather Locklear among the OGs returning for its latest series reboot.
It will be third time lucky for Locklear, whose advertising executive character Amanda Woodward turned the struggling series into a hit in its second season in 1993 and was also enlisted to star in the 2009 reboot which was cancelled after just one season.
It is Locklear’s first major role in several years, with the 62-year-old actor battling mental health and alcohol issues over the past two decades.
The other two original cast members lined up to join the soap’s latest refresh are Daphne Zuniga, who played photographer Jo Reynolds who was escaping an abusive marriage, and Laura Leighton, one of the show’s enduring arch-villains Sydney Andrews.
According to Hollywood bible Variety, the CBS reboot kicks off with the death of one of the previous residents of Melrose Place.
“When one of their dearest friends dies suddenly, the OG residents of Melrose Place gather to honour the deceased,” the synopsis for the new series states.
“But the pressure cooker of a reunion soon uncovers old traumas, rekindles old romances, reignites old resentments, and reveals new secrets … throwing our characters into chaotic drama that’s reminiscent of the past, but with a much more modern perspective.”
Hollywood studios have had mixed fortunes resurrecting much-loved 90s series.
Beverly Hills 90210, which inspired Melrose Place, ran for another five seasons when it was brought back in 2009.
The return of Sex and the City as And Just Like That… has polarised fans of the original series but is destined to last at least until 2025 when the third season is due to air.
Will and Grace returned in 2017 for three seasons but failed to capture the joy and edgy wit which made it such a huge success in the late 1990s.
Somehow The Conners, a continuation of the Roseanne sitcom, has managed to survive with consistent ratings in the US but not anywhere else, while the Fresh Prince reboot called Bel-Air also copped eyeballs in America but failed to match that ratings success here.
One of the most critical and commercial reboot success stories has been the return of Heartbreak High on Netflix with its second season dropping this week.
