An awkward moment unfolded on Sunrise this morning after Natalie Barr hilariously insulted her co-host, David “Kochie” Koch, resulting in him flipping the bird.
As he appeared on the breakfast show live from London, where he is currently covering King Charles III’s coronation, Koch’s appearance in a newsboy cap drummed up some nostalgia from Barr.
As she and fill-in host Matt Shirvington welcomed Koch on air, she couldn’t help but compare him to Aussie actor Glenn Robbins’ cap-wearing character Uncle Arthur from the classic sketch show, Comedy Company.
“Kochie, looking good,” Shirvington said, to which Barr quipped, “Uncle Arthur.”
Koch apparently thought he was channelling David Beckham with his Peaky Blinders-style cap, but Barr thought he looked more like the eccentric TV character.
Koch appeared beyond shock at the savage comparison, telling her to “Get out,” before putting up his rude finger.
“He’s upset – he’s visibly upset,” Shirvington said as Barr awkwardly laughed off Koch’s gesture.
“It becomes you – it’s beautiful,” she backtracked.
Koch dismissed her complement and tired to gather his thoughts to report on the events leading up to tomorrow’s coronation.
“I’ll take it off now,” he said, adding, “I’m offended.”
Uncle Arthur was a beloved character on the Australian series The Comedy Company, which ran on Network 10 from 1988 to 1990.
The show also featured many famous characters such as Con the Fruiterer (portrayed by Mark Mitchell), Kylie Mole (Mary-Anne Fahey), Col’n Carpenter (Kym Gyngell), and David Rabbitborough (Ian McFadyen).
In 1991, the show transitioned to Fast Forward.
Before departing for London for the coronation, Koch had been in the headlines for wearing lipstick on air.
Doing it for a good cause, the long-running Sunrise host rocked the bright hue to raise awareness for Lip-Stick It on May 11 – a day where Aussie men are encouraged to wear lipstick to help raise funds for women’s mental health support services.
