MICK Jagger was in very fine voice as the Rolling Stones resumed their 14 On Fire tour in Sydney last night.

The frontman made reference to the throat infection which forced the cancellation of their Hanging Rock concert last Saturday halfway through the gig.

“Sometimes I wanna sing, sometimes I lose my voice,” he adlibbed during Miss You.

Jagger revealed he had hosted a tea party for 103 of his family members in Sydney while recuperating.

But it was back to the business of rock’ n’roll the Stones helped construct the blueprint for last night with a fan’s dream greatest hits set.

After all the glitz and glamour of the pop shows that have crowded the Australian concert calendar this year, it was more exciting to be reminded what a band should sound like live, just as Bruce Springsteen did earlier this year.

Lets start with the hits. It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll, Tumbling Dice, Paint It Black, Jumpin Jack Flash, Sweet Virginia, Satisfaction, You Can’t Always Get What You Want, Brown Sugar.

Then give us marathon Mick, gyrating, gesticulating, hip swivelling, happy clapping. No one has the moves like Jagger.

Keith and Ronnie, bless them, remain the best guitar conversation on stage you will ever witness.

And Charlie, still the coolest drummer in the world.

The doubters may take aim at their age but the Stones defy you to keep up.

The crowd swelled in voice and rhythm for Honky Tonk Woman, Start Me Up, Sympathy For The Devil and the night’s highlightGimme Shelter.

The Rolling Stones retire? Let’s dare them to keep going and see just how many years the devil will give them.
