A stellar lineup of inspirational men, including renowned Australian musician DIESEL, celebrated positive male role models in the Darwin community for International Men’s Day.
Noone Left Behind hosted the 2024 International Men’s Day Lunch at Darwin Turf Club.
The 2024 event brought together 200 men from diverse sections of the community to connect and celebrate ‘Mateship’.
International Men’s Day is celebrated worldwide on November 19, with this year’s theme being ‘Positive Male Role Models’.
Some of the role models who spoke at the event included DIESEL, 2024 NAIDOC Youth of the Year Dante Rodrigues, men’s health champion Nathan Powell and Man Walk Australia founder Mark Burns.
The annual celebration draws attention to some of the physical and mental challenges men face in their daily lives.
Founder of Noone Left Behind, Bec Forrest, highlighted some of these challenges.
“International Men’s Day, and other initiatives showcasing men, are starting to gain traction,” she said.
“However, there is still much work to do to address men’s health. Seventy-five percent of those who take their own life are men, and more than 50 per cent of men report that their health isn’t something they like to talk about.”
Mark Lizotte, known by his stage name DIESEL, is a man who is prepared to speak about men’s health.
“There are a lot of constructs about what a man is,” he said.
“But I feel the true strength of a man is a man that can show his human side and show the real vulnerability. A real man doesn’t cry and all - it’s absolute rubbish.”
DIESEL reflected on his own upbringing and his father as a positive role model who broke the cycle of unhealthy male role models.
“Growing up, my Dad had a real deadbeat dad who wasn’t there,” he said.
“All things considered, my Dad actually did a good job and broke that cycle.
“My old man was so stoic, but he went soft towards the last bit of his life and it was beautiful to see. It was really beautiful.”
DIESEL was set to perform at the Darwin Entertainment Centre on Saturday night.
