Besides overlooking all the face filler, the toughest part about watching Married At First Sight this season is watching Tim’s apparent disgust at his wife Katie’s appearance.
Tim, who in his vows said being a “nice guy” has meant he has always finished last and then proceeded to act like the opposite of even a semi-decent man during this season, has made it very clear he finds his wife physically unattractive.
He describes her as “lovely” but then likes to have tantrums with producers over the fact that there’s no spark and what he means by that is that she isn’t “petite” enough to make him feel like a big man.
Katie, 37, who is objectively very attractive, - she looks like she even blow-dries her hair - spends her time trying to win over a man who genuinely cringes at her touch.
In a recent episode, Katie said that it came up over dinner that Tim’s preference is “petite, blonde, short girls or brunette”.
You know how nice guys are famous for saying, “I’m attracted to the exact opposite of you, now pass me the peas” over dinner.
“This poor guy. He’s got this monster curvy redhead,” she said.
She’s also been reduced to tears over her husband’s blatant rejection of her, saying “I don’t know what I have done wrong?” and shared she felt “humiliated”.
It’s all terribly depressing television.
It is upsetting to see an attractive woman made to feel like she’s not, and it is also an awful message to send to viewers at home.
If you’re not blonde, thin, spray-tanned and short enough to make Mr Tim feel very big then you’re an unattractive pariah.
It is also a factually incorrect message to send to women.
Katie is, by definition, an attractive woman, and this idea that if she looked more like a Kardashian she’d be more attractive to men is just ridiculous.
Most men, I’d say, would find Katie attractive because she is just kind of is? If you have any doubt about that, look around at your office, run club, or gym and look at all the married women in all shapes, sizes, and weights.
It isn’t like all the blonde spray-tanned women are married, and all the curvier brunette ones are stuck swiping on Tinder.
Men finding women like Katie attractive is the norm and not the exception to the rule.
Any normal person watching the show would find it strange that a man is acting openly revolted by a pretty woman.
When I was watching a recent episode, my boyfriend, who was pretending not to watch the episode, said, “What is wrong with him?” which hits the nail on the head, doesn’t it?
There’s something wrong with his behaviour, something so jarring that my boyfriend looked up from whatever Reddit thread he was reading to comment on it.
Reality television often holds up a magnifying glass to how the real world is, with some exaggeration, but in this case, it is just lying to women.
When Katie walked down the aisle to Tim, his best men looked at her and complimented how nice she seemed; no one was holding back shocked or disgusted faces, well, besides Tim.
Let’s not let one man’s gross behaviour make any woman for a second think men aren’t attracted to the Katies of the world.
But you know who might have a more challenging time winning someone over in the world? A man that behaves like Tim.
