Jackson Browne postpones Sydney and Melbourne shows

American rocker Jackson Browne has been forced to postpone his anticipated Sydney and Melbourne shows.

The singer was due to play in Sydney tonight and in Melbourne on Sunday night as part of his multi-city Australian and New Zealand tour.

In a statement this morning, Browne said he was “very sick” and cannot go on as planned in Sydney.

“Though I have been taking antibiotics, and have had three days of vocal rest, that has not produced the results I was hoping for. In fact, I don’t actually know what kind of infection I have,” he said.

“This means I must postpone the rescheduled Melbourne show also. I’m very disappointed, because our shows have been going so well, and we have all been so excited to play for you.

“I’m disappointed too, not to get to hear [supporting act] Liz Stringer. I promise to get back here at the first opportunity, and play these two shows.”

Browne had earlier pushed his Melbourne show to Sunday from its original schedule on Thursday. He had played in Perth on Tuesday.

Browne is expected to keep three New Zealand dates next week.

The promoter, Frontier Touring, has urged fans to hold onto their tickets and has flagged information for rescheduled dates will be forthcoming in the coming days. Ticketek will directly contact ticketholders and those unable to attend the new dates will be offered refund.

The 74-year-old musician emerged on the scene as a teenager, writing song “These Days” for German singer Nico. He also wrote the Eagles’ “Take it Easy”.

He released his first album in 1972 and his biggest hits include “The Pretender”, “Doctor My Eyes”, “Somebody’s Baby”, “Running on Empty” and “Stay”.

He was inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 was ranked the 37th greatest songwriter of all time by Rolling Stone.
