FOUR mates from Sydney are on the cusp of knocking One Direction from their mantle as the biggest boy band in the world.

5 Second Of Summer drew a massive crowd of thousands in New York’s Rockerfeller Plaza overnight.

The band, made up of Sydney mates Michael Clifford, Ashton Irwin, Luke Hemmings and Calum Hood, rose to frenzied-level prominence early this year with the release of their second single “She Looks So Perfect”.

The baby-faced foursome performed live on The Today Show to celebrate the US release of their self-titled debut album, sparking chaotic scenes.

Show host Matt Lauer described the waiting crowd as one of the biggest he has seen a musical guest attract, later declaring it a larger turnout than that attracted by One Direction in 2012.

Some of the teenage fans told local media they had camped out for up to six days prior to secure a prime spot to see the Aussie lads.

Their whirlwind success has seen them go from modest YouTube stars to become household names in the US.

Now some critics are comparing them to uber-popular One Direction, who they were the support act for during their Australian tour.

“This is the most incredible thing that ever happened to us right now,” Irwin said before taking to the stage.

The boys performed three songs for the adoring crowd, including “Amnesia”.

It was recently announced that the band would perform at the MTV Video Music Awards.
