5 Seconds Of Summer enjoy one of the biggest selling No. 1 debut records in America this year

PUNK pop band 5SOS have become the latest Australian band to smash the charts in the US - following Sia and Iggy Azalea.

AUSTRALIAN teen rockers 5 Seconds Of Summer have smashed into a No. 1 debut on the American charts, confirming their arrival as one of the biggest acts of the year.

The band’s self-titled album sold a phenomenal 259,000 copies in its first week, giving 5SOS the biggest selling debut by an Australian artist in the US.

They are also the first Australian group to hit No. 1 since AC/DC’s Black Ice spent two weeks on top in 2008

Propelled by singles She Looks So Perfect, Amnesia and Don’t Stop, the album has already sold 1.5 million copies worldwide in the past month, after debuting at No. 1 in Australia, New Zealand, Italy and Ireland and at No. 2 in the UK and Sweden.

They have sold more than two million singles in the US alone and had five songs from the album in the top 50 of the ARIA charts as the album was released here last month.

Since forming at high school just three years ago, the four musicians and songwriters have been on a steep trajectory to success.

In between writing songs with some of the world’s biggest hitmakers, they have played arenas and stadiums with One Direction and now are selling out their own shows in major venues.

Their Sydney and Melbourne homecoming gigs in Australia in 2015 sold out within half an hour when they went on sale last week.

There were strong signs 5SOS would follow Sia to be the next Australian act to command the lofty heights of the US charts after her 1000 Forms Of Fear record soared to the top a few weeks ago.

More than 15,000 fans lined New York streets last week when they performed for the Today Show and Los Angeles streets were closed when Jimmy Kimmel Live! threw a block party for fans.

American commentators have signalled that the Australian band could be the act to usher punk pop back onto the airwaves globally.

And it looks like they are right.

“When you start a band, you do it to have fun with your friends,” guitarist Michael Clifford said recently.

“For it now to have developed where someone is saying this is the band that could bring back pop punk, that’s unbelievable, that’s one of the craziest things in the world.”

The debut comes as the band are about to rejoin their One Direction mates for their Where We Are shows in North America, kicking off in Toronto tomorrow.

They may get the more decibel-busting screams than their British boy band mates considering the 5 Seconds of Summer album also debuted at No. 1 in Canada this week.
