‘Off the deep end’: Star selling $100 tinfoil hats and ‘brain protection durags’

This top rapper has launched her own fashion line – and promises the items will protect your brain, genitals and everything in between from 5G.

Rapper M.I.A. has launched her own fashion line – and it’s clothing designed to stop “Wi-Fi, 4G & 5G from reaching your brain.”

The Paper Planes rapper, 48, recently launched a fashion label called OHMNI with a mission statement to “[preserve] your privacy, autonomy, and rights over your body and your data.”

It’s a conspiracy theorist’s shopping heaven, with items like the “Tin Foil Hat,” a bucket hat retailing for $100.

“Made with pure Copper Nickel shielding fabric, this is the Tin Foil hat you have been waiting for,” the product description boasts, promising that due to “its unique atomic structure, Copper offers exceptional electrical conductivity, deflecting electromagnetic waves such as Wi-Fi & 5G with up to 99.999% shielding effectiveness.”

$50 will get you the Potency Boxer Shorts, “containing 80% pure Silver” which “offers exceptional electrical conductivity, deflecting electromagnetic waves such as Wi-Fi & 5G with up to 99.999% shielding effectiveness.”

These boxer shorts will apparently protect your nether regions from, erm … Wi-Fi.

For $200 you can buy the Full Protection Poncho, again with Copper fabric to “protect you from the numerous risks linked to electromagnetic radiation.” The Brain Protection Durag costs $100 and offers – you guessed it – “full brain protection day and night” from “electromagnetic waves such as Wi-Fi & 5G.”

M.I.A. was one of the most exciting new musical artists to emerge in the early noughties, fusing different sounds and styles across albums like Arular and Kaya as she rapped about her experiences as a child of Sri Lankan immigrants.

So this latest venture, an entire clothing line modelled around 5G conspiracy theories, has been met with a mixture of derision and disappointment by some fans.

“MIA is selling literal tinfoil hats :(,” one fan wrote.

“Heard a story the great artist M. I. A went off the deep end into conspiracy s**t. Yes, it’s real. She’s advertising a clothing brand that literally sells Tin Foil Hats to protect against 5G. Oh my god,” tweeted another.

“M. I. A really went off the deep end huh? Talking about 5G radio waves and armor,” said one fan.

“Would it be cultural approp for me to purchase and wear the M.I.A. anti-Wi-Fi anti-5G durag?” another asked.

OHMNI’s website appears to hedge its bets, with the brand’s mission statement arguing that “if the conspiracy theorists are wrong, good for you, you own some beautiful clothes made with pure silver and precious metals. But, if they are right, you just might have saved the future of humanity.”

In 2019, M.I.A. claimed on social media that 5G will soon “mutate [us] into radioactive cyborgs.” She later linked 5G to Covid, claiming that the “last pandemic came with radio waves. Now 5G. The shift is not easy.”

There is no evidence linking 5G or radio waves to the spread of respiratory diseases like Covid.
