Montaigne launches her 2021 Eurovision song Technicolour ahead of Mardi Gras live premiere

Montaigne has released the song she hopes will win Australia the coveted Eurovision crown. It’s future pop style gives us a good shot.

MONTAIGNE has fired up the lasers and glitter guns with her poptastic new song Technicolour in her quest to win the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest.

The avant-garde pop artist is cautiously optimistic the show will go on in May and she will get to perform the song on the Eurovision stage in the Netherlands.

Montaigne releases the “hyperpop” song on Friday and premieres it live at the Sydney Mardi Gras on Saturday.

The passionate gamer said Technicolour reflected her love of anime and science-fiction.

It falls into the pop music with a message Eurovision category with its lyrics serving as a call-to-arms to come together for positive change.

“I feel like all my life I have been making incredibly ‘self-serious’ music and in the last year I’ve felt I could be more playful,” Montaigne said.

“I love sci-fi, anime and video games-related content and for me, the song could be the anthem for a vigilante group of queer, young women … who go to take down tech billionaires.

“So the lasers (in the lyrics) are a nod to them having cool, futuristic, superhero weapons.”

No doubt lasers will feature heavily in the colourful staging of her performance which is being designed in conjunction with SBS Head of Delegation Josh Martin and creative director Paul Clarke.

“Technicolour begins by addressing the universal and personal challenges of the

pandemic, then it empowers you to be a superhero and rise above. It’s all done with

Montaigne’s cheeky sense of humour, at once vulnerable and kinda fierce,” Clarke said.

Thousands of Eurovision diehards have been eagerly awaiting the reveal of Montaigne’s entry for the 2021 competition.

Her campaign to represent Australia at last year’s event with Don’t Break Me was cancelled due to the pandemic shutdown of international borders.

SBS decided she would be given her shot at the title this year rather than stage another Australia Decides selection show.

Montaigne said COVID-19 vaccination would be a requirement for artists if the contest goes ahead with artists live in Rotterdam rather than a virtual event.

“We’ve made heaps of plans … are we going there? They feel fairly certain that we will,” she said.

“If we can’t, then we’ll do a prerecord in Australia.”
